Bitrate Optimization

Learn how to fine-tune your stream settings for optimal quality

As you advance on your streaming journey, optimizing your bitrate settings becomes essential for providing high-quality content while ensuring a positive viewer experience. Bitrate refers to the amount of data sent each second during your stream, which influences both video clarity and smooth playback.

Understanding Bitrate

  • Video Bitrate: The quantity of video data transmitted per second, typically measured in kilobits per second (Kbps).
  • Audio Bitrate: The amount of audio data sent per second.
  • Resolution & Frame Rate: Higher resolutions and frame rates require increased bitrates to sustain quality.

Recommended Bitrate Settings

ResolutionFrame RateRecommended BitratePlatform Notes
1080p60 fps4500–6000 KbpsTwitch caps at 6000 Kbps
1080p30 fps3000–4500 KbpsGood for moderate movement
720p60 fps2500–4000 KbpsIdeal balance for most streams
720p30 fps1500–2500 KbpsLess bandwidth needed
480p30 fps1000–1500 KbpsSuitable for limited upload speeds

Note: Your upload speed should be at least 1.5 times your combined bitrate to avoid buffering issues.

Optimizing Bitrate in OBS Studio

  1. 1
    Launch OBS Studio.
  2. 2
    Go to Settings > Output.
  3. 3
Change the Output Mode to Advanced.
  4. 4
    Under Streaming Tab:
    • Encoder: Choose x264 for CPU encoding or NVENC/AMD for GPU encoding.
    • Rate Control: Opt for CBR (Constant Bitrate) for stable quality.
    • Bitrate: Enter your desired bitrate according to the table above.
    • Keyframe Interval: Set this to 2 seconds.
    • Preset: Select "veryfast" for x264 or "quality" for NVENC.
    • Profile: Select "high" for better compatibility.
  5. 5
Apply your changes and save the settings.
